Molecular mechanisms of IL-15-induced bystander T cell activation and clinical significance

Eui-Cheol Shin, MD, PhD

Graduate School of Medical Science and Engineering, KAIST, Daejeon, Korea and
The Center for Viral Immunology, Korea Virus Research Institute, IBS, Daejeon, Korea
During viral infection, pre-existing memory CD8 + T cells that are not specific for the infecting
virus can be activated by cytokines without cognate antigens, termed bystander activation.
Recent studies have demonstrated that bystander-activated CD8 + T cells exert either
protective or detrimental effects on the host depending on the infection model or disease.
In this lecture, I will present our recent data showing the mechanisms and
immunopathological roles of IL-15-induced bystander CD8 + T cell activation in acute viral
hepatitis. In addition, I will discuss molecular regulations of bystander activation-related
genes and clinical significance of bystander activation.
