Never Easy To Say Goodbye: Organ Separation Processes in Plants

Plants respond to various environmental stimuli through growth, so the elimination of organs
is as important to plants as generation. The process of organ abscission, which encompasses
when, where, and how to eliminate, and how to heal the wounds after organ shedding, not
only requires the integration of complex signaling networks, but also requires sophisticated
spatial control mechanisms of enzymes for precise separation. In recent years, much progress
has been made in understanding the molecular mechanisms of organ abscission and key
signaling pathways have been identified. However, our knowledge is still very limited, and in
particular, little is known about how the spatial control of abscission is precisely regulated
and how the tissue heals after abscission. We have been conducting various genetic
screenings over the years to find spatiotemporal regulators of organ abscission, and recently
found several mutants that are defective in abscission timing, separation zone, and post-
abscission process. In this talk, I will introduce our current understanding of these mutants.
