Engineer the neuroepigenetic programs to amplify axon regenerative potential

Yongcheol Cho, Ph.D.
The Axon Lab @ DUTR of Gpr151 is a regulator of axon regeneration to promote the association of ribosomal
protein mRNAs with CSDE1

Neurons are vulnerable to damage due to their distinct structures of long and thin axons, which usually
lead to irreversible neurological disorders when the central nervous system have a mechanical injury. However,
some types of neurons such as sensory neurons in the peripheral nervous system activate epigenetic programs to
shift the neuronal competence of axonal growth and regenerate their injured axons. This unique process enables
the injured axons to regenerate and re-connect the original targets for full functional recovery. We are dissecting
the molecular mechanisms of the axon regeneration programs and the neuroepigenetic processes regulating

neuronal injury responses. Comparative multi-omics tools reveal the distinct signal transductions from the non-
regenerating and the pro-regenerating neurons. The analysis presents the novel targets for manipulating to promote

axon regeneration and engineer the neuronal regenerative potential for developing therapeutic applications.
