About the lab.

암은 유전체 불안정성 (Genetic Instability)의 질병이다.

즉, 유전자의 돌연변이가 급격히 증가하면서 끊임없이 성장하며 다른 기관으로 전이하고 침투하는 암세포의 기능을 획득하게 된다는 것이다. 정상세포가 이런 기능을 획득하여 암세포가 되려면 세포 주기 조절 (Cell cycle control), 세포 사멸 (Apoptosis), 염색체 분열 (Chromosome segregation), DNA 복제 (DNA replication), DNA 복구 손상 (DNA Repair) 기작 등 유전 정보 유지 (Genetic integrity)에 필수적 유전자들에 돌연변이가 일어나야 한다. 이에 따라 세포 돌연변이율이 105~107배 높아지면서 암세포의 특성을 획득하게 된다는 것이 현재 가장 많이 받아들여지고 있는 암의 발생 기작이다. 따라서 암세포는 유전정보의 손실이 정상세포보다 훨씬 높은 유전체 불안정성 (Genetic Instability)의 질병이다.

본 연구실은 이러한 암세포의 특징인 유전체 불안정성이 어떻게 발생하는지 규명하기 위해 Tumor suppressor인 BRCA2의 기능에 대한 연구를 진행하고 있으며, 마우스, zebrafish 동물 모델 등을 이용하여 유전체 안정성 유지 기작에 대한 연구를 활발히 진행 중이다.
