Xylem, the vascular tissue responsible for water transport, can dynamically regulate plant water relations despite being composed of dead cells. This process is often mediated by xylem occlusion, in which tyloses or gels block xylem conduits to restrict water flow. Xylem occlusion plays a crucial role in reproductive maturation and environmental responses of plants; however, its mechanism remains elusive. To investigate the upstream cues that trigger occlusion, my research adopts Viola philippica as a model system where gel occlusion occurs in the context of a unique seed dispersal trait. By integrating approaches such as functional genetics and spatial omics, this work aims to elucidate how plants regulate vascular function to coordinate development and environmental adaptation.
